At Walmart, I'm more familiar with the layout of the store, thus I could reduce my exposure time and prices are less expensive, however, it would be more crowded with the "unwashed" masses.

At Safeway it would take me longer to find stuff and it is more expensive, but it would be less crowded with a higher class of (read - more washed) people.

I think the clues in the name of the store.. go the 'safe way'.. little extra cost for a peaceful mind.. BTW, Safeway in the UK is not a "higher-class" shopping experience.
