"The JDM-only special edition harkens back to the last days of the AE86. It was back in January 1986 when Toyota unveiled the AE86 Black Limited as a last hurrah for the affordable sports car many of us fell in love with by watching Initial D."

Somebody on here mentioned this back when the Black Edition "concept" was shown at the Tokyo auto show. They drew the same parallel between the AE86 Black and the 86 Black being the end of the line for the model (as it is now). Don't remember what thread it was in but it stands out in my memory because all the clickbaits said they were introducing the next gen car and then all they showed was the Black Limited and Supra.

This is a very, very, VERY rare example when I agree with Motor1's implied assessment of things.
