How do you know the bearings are gone? Either way the engine has to come out.
If you have the tools and space to work on it you can do it yourself.

Or at lest get the engine out yourself the. Have a shop do the actual engine work. That way you'll save a few bucks.

Unless you are good at rebuilding engines and got all the tools go for it. Do it all yourself.

Option 2: bend over and take it all (price wise) pay a shop to fix it.
Since you don't want to buy an engine even though the price for a used one can be a lot lower than having a shop do all the work.
