I always thought it was because putting it in neutral wastes gas. On a fuel injected engine, whenever you let off the gas to slow down, the ECU can cut fuel completely to aid in fuel savings and engine braking. By putting the car in neutral, the ECU has to keep the engine running since there is no inertia carrying it along from the car slowing down. So you waste gas by putting it in neutral... if gas savings are what people are looking for.
