Optima's are actually not gel batteries. As far as I can tell there are very few that are as the production process to make them a gell is not worth it. There is basically silica in the electrolytic fluid to make it a "gell". Absorbed glass matt accomplishes about the same thing and is easier to produce.
We have brought back some discharged Optima's, but the main problem is their lead plates don't hold up to rough use. I believe they are using a higher content of recycled lead, which is more brittle, leading to cell failure.
