My suggestion to post a negative review isn't about potential damage. It's about the disrespect involved in handling a customer's property. It's fair to let potential customers know that the shop doesn't respect you or the property you entrust to them.

Exactly! It's about respecting other people's property. It probably didn't do any harm but, what if it had? Or, what if something happens down the road.
Definitely contact the business owner and register your displeasure. Then follow it up in writing. If it's like the coating I got, I have to return the car every year for inspection and a surface treatment to keep the warranty valid. If this guy wants to keep your business and not get bad press he should be willing to own this.
