I have a hydrofluoric acid story from back in the early 80's...I was just a dopey high school kid washing cars at the local VW dealership, and our equally dopey chemical supply delivery guy dropped off a 5 gallon pail of the stuff one day and said "Here, try this.. it works AWESOME on dirty wheels, but be sure to dilute it a bit..." End of safety lecture.
It DID work like gangbusters on otherwise hopelessly grungy aluminum wheels, but man, it was some harsh stuff... No protective gear at all, mixed anywhere from 2:1 and stronger, and applied with a spray bottle...mist everywhere, all over our hands, fumes were chokingly strong, etc. It wasn't until I was in college and my organic chem instructor was talking about how bad it really was, that I realized I'd once again narrowly missed the Darwin hammer...
