Ultimate Racing Turbo Kit Sorta Review

I just wanted to post a rough draft of my experience with the Ultimate Racing Turbo kit.

Let me preface this with this; my girlfriend paid for the turbo. I have to get that out of the way because she loves to blurt that out every chance she gets, lol.

I was looking at a couple of cheaper turbo kits as I didn't want to pay 5-10k for a kit. Initially I was looking at the SBD kits, and I followed them for a while. They always sounded like a great option and they probably are. I haven't seen anything bad about them still. Somehow I came across the Ultimate Racing kit after purchasing their exhaust parts. I didn't realize they had a kit, but once I had their other products I was impressed and decided I would look into theirs. Part of my goal was to recreate the sound of my old 07 sti, or the iconic Subaru sound. The SBD kit required that I use their manifold, as did most of the other kits. I think there was a JDL kit that allowed any headers, but regardless, the Ultimate Racing kit didn't require me to purchase a specific manifold, but instead I was able to keep my UEL catless headers. This was no brainer at that point! It's perfect for that distinct Subaru sound.

I toyed with the kit and added and removed multiple upgrades, and finally figured out what I wanted. It was a bit over $4300.

I had reached out to the UR team a couple times and they suggested which upgrades to get based on my needs and they did a great job. I asked for quickest spool. I ended up upgrading to the Gt3076r. It's very quick 0-90, but nothing to write home about above 100.

I got it around xmas 2017. Initially I got it and it was missing the turbo from the box. It was pretty lame. I got everything but the turbo. I was pretty p.o'ed. I had to wait another week or two for the replacement. I finally got it and was able to get everything installed pretty easily. There are some pretty tight spots, but I managed to get it done.

Overall, I love it. I've had some issues here and there, but I think it is installer issues, and nothing that turns me off. The car is perfect now, and there is still room for improvement with built internals. I don't I need to build the engine, but I may just because project car. I was able to install an aftermarket BOV. I didn't like the sound of the one I upgraded to. It was a flutter and I preferred a gust of air. I don't know if that's an added feature compared to others, but it's nice that I am not limited to one setup. I can make changes as I need and retune where necessary, which btw, I have been using this turbo on an etune for a couple years now and my car is still in one piece. No mechanical issues so far. I hit boost all the time and am not nice to the car. It has handled all my abuse so far. I did get in a wreck in March, 2018 and the car was off the road until like June'ish, but I've driven it plenty to get a good feel for the kit.

Also, I wanted to point out that I have not installed an oil cooler yet. I wanted to and planned to, but just haven't yet. I was considering the radiators with built in oil coolers, but haven't decided yet. My temps probably average about 230f after driving for about 30-60 minutes (mind you I don't drive nice for the car, constant redlines in first and second). I've seen it as high as 247f, but above 230f it doesn't update often, or the temps stay put around there, I'm not sure. I'm using OBD fusion to track my temps, etc.

I would recommend this kit regardless of any issues I've had, which I will highlight, hopefully not discouraging anyone, as I bet it's just me who caused the issues.

List of issues I've had:
gasket between headers and turbo down-pipe get's blown out like nobody's business. I had to get grimmspeed gasket to fix the blow outs as it would literally blow the normal gaskets to pieces!

Oil return line is in a very tight space. If you don't get it right the first time, it's painful squeezing hands and tools in there, but again, I don't blame the kit, just me and doing stuff wrong or not well enough the first time. I've since fixed the line with lots of knuckle skin, but it's hangin in there quite well since then. Wurm clamps > zip ties, haha.

My turbo filter broke off, but this could be due to me making the wurm clamp too tight, as that is what it looks like. I just squeezed what's left of it back on and reclamped it, and it seems to be doing just fine. Again, probably my fault. I have been tightening the clamps with a drill, so in some cases I may have over done. Either way, not a big deal. It still works, and I wanted to get a newer, prettier one anyway, but I still haven't had to.

Lots of tight squeezes, but this is the car and not the turbo, but still can be painful getting it installed with all the tight spots.

You need to either re-route the battery to the trunk or opt for a smaller Optoma type battery, which I love. UR crew recommended against the small batteries, but I went for it anyways and I prefer it over running the full size battery to the trunk. One battery bubbled so I replaced it and the new one is great!

Those are the issues I can think of. None of them would persuade to go another route.

I don't know what hp I am at, but probably near 300 as someone else with the same kit and upgraded turbo was pushing 293 whp, so I will assume it's somewhere between 250-300whp somewhere. It gets it pretty well, especially second gear. I think it can hit 0-60 in 5 or less depending on the driver, but who knows, just assuming.

This was a rough draft word vomit review. Sorry if it's all over the place. I just wanted to share and recommend the UR kit and get some eyes on it for anyone looking. I'd recommend it 10x over!
