If the transmission is cold, I'll go 1st --> neutral --> 2nd with the shifter. All the while, I'm clutched in the whole time (not double clutching). For some reason, it works well for me. Much less notchiness. Used to do it on my previous VW as well. Else, I'd get locked out during really cold weather.
When the temp gets up (15 minutes or so), I'll just shift regularly 1-->2 and it's pretty smooth. Sometimes can feel the synchros if I try to shift too quickly but it's a lot better than when it's cold.
Either way, gears 1-3 have triple-coned synchros. I like to think on stock power, it lasts longer than any of us will care to own the car.
You'll hear and sometimes feel a lot of things you ordinarily don't in most other cars, due to the lack of insulatio,n and the transmission being right beside your leg. So long as the car runs ok, it seems to be the norm. Drive on!
