I've had an alternator go out on me while driving when I use to own a Camaro and plenty of other cars I've worked on. The dash lights and headlights started to dim right be fore everything shut off. As teadmiral976 mentioned you can check the voltage out put at the alt or batt and it should be high 13s to low/mid 14s on average.
This can throw codes without a check engine light coming on. Generally you can get some codes about battery issues and other sensors with low voltage. There's also a battery icon/dash light that should come on when you have battery issues.
I've had cam angle sensor codes pop up every now and then but go away with out causing me issues.
