Obviously, most of you people didn't live in the shadow of the Great Depression!
We just didn't run into town to buy store bought stuff every whipstitch. We used what was available, like baking soda. After a box of baking soda (used for cooking) was partially used, the half used box was put in the bathroom to use for brushing our teeth. After it got too hard for that it was put in the ice box to absorb odors.
THEN, after it was all full of odors, it was used to neutralize battery acid.
SMH - at the spoilt generations.
