My end goal is to have a loud-ish car, with UEL's while still having a conversation in the car with someone.

Pops and bangs are a plus

Am I asking too much here?

Yes, you are. Your car can either be loud or not loud. Being really loud and popping and banging, but not so loud that it seems to be beyond some arbitrary threshold you have... is being exhaust bipolar.

Just get a normal aftermarket exhaust with a muffler. Those are plenty loud!

Right now it probably sounds like this guy that parks on my street... He has a muffler deleted brz that is so absurdly loud and it sounds like absolute garbage. I think he works at a restaurant nearby and is always parked during the day and then leaves late at night and wakes me up. I enjoy a good loud exhaust on cars usually, but our cars just sound horrible if you do this. These engines don't sound great naturally (sorry guys, it's just true - 4 cyl boxer engines sound like cheap tractors as that's what the design was originally used for). It seriously sounds worse than a weed wacker, but as loud as a jet. They really really need some sound tuning that you can only get from a resonator and muffler if you want any hope of it sounding pleasant.

Apologies for the rant, just stop muffler deleting these cars and I won't have to make posts like this.
