Well, my take is that "pops and crackles" are a sign that the engine is not happy.
Maybe I think that way because back-in-the-day, when an engine sounded like that it was usually because the timing was off or the engine had waaay too many carburetors on it, for the cam to handle -
OR, some idiot was just cutting off the ignition and turning it back on, trying to blow the muffler off -
