Anything with a push button or knob can just tell you "no".
The Mercedes shifter shows a little diagram in the cluster,

Depending on what you're doing and the state of the car, little arrows appear for all possible shifts.
In park, no foot on the brake, you can't do anything. Foot on the brake, they all light up. Stopped in neutral, brake on or off you can go anywhere.
It's a little tiny arrow most people probably never notice.
In park, no brake pedal.
In park, with brake pedal.
In drive, at standstill.
In drive, at speed.
