The reason the belief exists that 2 seaters cost more to insure comes from the fact that there are a handful of cars that came in 2 seater AND 2+2 and the same person asks to be quoted between the 2 models and the 2 seater pretty much always has increased insurance rates.

Of course, there are other factors at play besides just 2 extra seats. Primarily, the 2 seaters are typically specialized trim levels which cost more and the people interested in 2+2 vs 2 seater are different and I suspect the ones interested in just the 2 seater come from a higher risk group.

As for my opinion of the back seats, meh. I've had one person in the rear seats exactly once in my 5 years of ownership but it is nice to just be able to throw stuff back there.
