if you really are using the automotive 3m doublesided tape, get your self some 3m adhesion promoting wipes and wipe down the tape surface prior to trying it again. I literally don't think I could pull mine off if I wanted to right now.

With that said, I have also used some dow corning 732 caulking to put on a carbon fiber diverter on my fender and barely got that shit off. The cleanup process to get the remains of the silicone off the paint once the piece was off was a pain in the ass and I wouldnt suggest it.
I made sure the both surfaces where prep properly and i used the right 3m tape its just theres not good enough contact between the ducktail and the trunk.
