Well, that sucks -

If in fact the timing chain did break, it's a wonder that the engine didn't suffer major damage since, I understand, it's an interference engine design.

You might ask a person from the shop to ride with you and take it a spin around the block before you accept it. Listen for any loud noises and look for any oil leaks.
