I called multiple dealers and the way they handle their waiting lists all differ. Some want check for deposit and will just hold it, others will cash it for a free loan. Some will take a credit card and not run it through others, you get the drift. Regarding a specific color / transmission, if you have 2 colors you like make sure they know as someone may cancel once theirs arrive.
Many of the dealers that wanted a deposit still kept my name and called when the car came in although that was in May before people realized what the excitement was all about.
