I had a similar thing happen while driving my old corolla once. I was driving home from a cabin out in the mountains and one of my rear tires was nearly flat. I drove around for almost an hour before I reached a gas station and realized it was like that. I re-inflated the tire and it seemed to be holding air okay even though I could see the sidewall was pretty torn up. It was pretty late and I had to work the next morning, so I just went "Well... I gotta get home ASAP... I'll just take it easy" and kept driving, thinking I'd have it replaced the next day. About 20 minutes later the sidewall tore open (looked very similar to OPs pic) and I was stuck on the side of the road for 2 hours until triple A came. Obviously in retrospect, I should have swapped the donut on at the gas station instead of re-inflating the fucked up tire. Instead, I ended up having to wait on the tiny shoulder of a mountain highway for almost 3 hours for Triple A to come because my gf didn't want me changing a tire in the dark with trucks flying by at 75-80mph every 10 seconds.
