What ambient conditions cause headlights to haze?

UV from the sun and particles in the air sandblast the plastic in modern polycarbonate headlight covers. I tried UV paint protection film on my 2006 Civic Si with great results. I should've done the same with my FR-S but I was more concerned about the front bumper and hood. I still have a 2008 Scion tC and it unprotected headlights completed hazed within a couple years.
