I've worked in sales for years and drove my 86 all over. I haven't done major modifications to my car like some people, but what I have done I've done myself. There are youtube videos and/or DIY install walkthroughs for many items here on the forum.
Of course, as many have already said, it helps to know what exactly you are planning on modifying but you will save hundreds if not thousands by taking the time to learn and do it yourself for many things, and you won't feel like a 'bitch' anymore since you learned how to do it.
