It's a group that falls under CASC (canadian automobile sports club), they follow most of the SCCA rules, but are pretty relaxed in terms of classing, what you bring, etc. Unless you're absolutely crushing your competition, kinda like the guy who was codriving with me (he finished 27th overall, whereas I was 58th overall, with 120+ drivers!) the organizers aren't really going to say anything, unless there's a safety risk, ie; rollovers. I think the rule is that your track width must be greater than your overall height, so if the dakota was sufficiently lowered, and had wider wheels, it may have been ok to run.
There were all sorts of cars there, from a stock Jetta TDI to a Miata based, tubular chassis, with a racecar body on top of everything.

I missed a gate, but finished the run. When I was marshalling, I spoke with a guy who had been doing some form of autox for a few decades now. He basically said "if you miss a gate, and it's safe to do so, keep going. You can always use the practice".
