The temp gauge is bullshit. It goes to the middle and stays there until the engine is abnormally hot. Then it shoots up.
Oh, that is soo old school -

OP, to clarify, get a large pan and put a couple of inches of cool water in it. Hang a candy thermometer into the water. Add three medium sized frogs. Turn up the heat until the water boils. Note the temperature that the thermostat opens (if it does).

If the frogs stay in the water till it boils, cut their legs off, add salt and pepper and enjoy some fresh frog legs -
