Engine braking literally has nothing to do with downshifting. Engine braking by definition is anytime you lift off the throttle and the ECU cuts all fuel and spark. It puts LESS wear on the engine than idling. If you want to argue about wear then leave engine braking out of it and stick purely to arguing that downshifts wear because that is technically correct although insignificant when done properly.
