Learn to rev match heel and toe downshift...
Sure you'll screw up a few times but within a week it'll be fine.
There really is no risk in downshifting, especially if you're rev matching. If you think otherwise, then you really have no business driving a manual car. The last thing your transmission/clutch and other drivers need is you not being able to handle a clutch/brake/shifter in a panic situation.
