It's the key fob battery.
The fact that it started during cold weather could just be a coincidence, but cold also reduces battery efficiency and can finish off one that is already on its way out. What you're describing is what it does when the battery is going out.
If you have two fobs, be ready to change the other one also. The batteries in these things go out around the same time whether you're using them or not. When the one in my pocket went out, I went and grabbed the one I had never used out of the kitchen drawer. It was dead too.
