Those old school fenders lines go back into the body though and contours the car much more cleanly. The ones in the OP looks like they just chopping a piece of the fender off and called it a day.

Yeah, I know. The Trust and Speedhunter GT86's have similar type of fender flares. Maybe wind tunnel tests have shown that the taper might be a downfall.
