Forgot to mention, smog is an issue if you are trying to sell it anywhere outside of your original state.

If indeed you are a resident of Montana, there's no smog for title transfer.
If you live in Southern California and are trying to sell an out of state vehicle in California, you pass the responsibility of smog check for title transfer to the buyer.

At the end of the day, there's CA title transfer requirements (or any title transfer smog in any state that requires it), so this is important if you are serious about selling the car to prospective buyers. Makes it an easier sell if the buyer doesn't have to jump through hoops like fake companies in no-smog states to mod their cars.
