It's supposed to lower the dash line and give added visibility, but then you're forced to look at garbage inside and its noticeable when walking away.

They're placing the displays higher up now too, probably to keep your line of sight closer to the road.
I noticed a lot of displays cannot be 100% turned off either unlike the display headunit in our cars. The first thing I did with my 86 was turn the brightness down and then turn it off.
I like simple interiors, and with cars turning into offices that drive them selves it's a sad time indeed.
