Reminds me of a Nam story my younger brother (a Vietnam combat veteran) tells. The VC would pull the pin on a hand grenade then hold the handle down with a section of bicycle tubing then place it down the fuel filler tube and on into the fuel tank on certain Army vehicles.

In time, the rubber would deteriorate and allow the handle to fly off - 8-10 seconds later BIG BOOM - the grenade plus several gallons of fuel, exploding in an unexpected area.

So, when the vehicle drivers would hear something rolling around in the fuel tanks, they would get paranoid. In time, the VC discovered they could just put rocks in fuel tanks to send a vehicle into maintenance -
