I have a spare motor that came out of an FRS. It was gone through by a tech at a Toyota dealership that pulled it from a wreaked car, plasti-gauged the rod bearings, did a comp and leak down, and then reassembled. The amount of sealant used on the timing cover and oil pan is excessive and I will be pulling it back apart. If that is representative of what is happening during the recall work then I could understand how there might be many assembly issues. I should post pictures of it.

Please do post pictures. I’m kind of curious to see the kind of slop job they are doing on the packing.

Just sitting here thinking. There is one oil gallery near the edge of the timing cover that could get blocked. Its far enough away from the edge that you would need to get fairly carried away with the packing to reach this gallery but if you miss placed the cover and then slid it into place it very easily could cover that gallery. The recall instructions instruct you to use a new SST which are 4 long guide posts that are just threaded studs that go in all 4 corners that are used to prevent you from miss aligning the cover. The original repair manual doesn’t include this SST. Seems Subaru predicted this as a trouble point and developed a tool. Perhaps the dealers aren’t buying this tool or maybe aren’t using it.

That cover is large so it’s hard to watch both ends for alignment while placing it. When I did mine I had someone help me. I explained how critical it was to get it 100% aligned without shifting after contact before we started to place it. You really don’t want to place it and then shift it even 1mm into place. Shifting it means smearing the packing out of place.
