After working on my own car quite a bit and getting tired of it (I even brought it to a shop a bunch of times, but the damn thing just needed so much fixing in so many places), I think there's a few reasons:
-Some things are really annoying or tedious
-Some things are much much harder to do by yourself without all the equipment a shop has
-Getting cuts on the hands sucks
-Getting things dirty sucks
-If your car is nice enough (sports cars are definitely shifting towards the high end now), there's not much to mod, and routine maintenance done all in one visit by a shop is very convenient. E.g. modern Porsches, there's not really any sensible mods to do to them...everything is well sorted and track ready from the factory, the aero is very good, and there's not much weight to throw out without ruining the comfort. All the maintenance is a pain in the ass but infrequent so just drop it off at the shop and pay up once a year.
That said there's non-trivial hassle just bringing the car to the shop, so when I get a car again I'm going to try to do as much as I can myself, if it's a high-maintenance kind of car. Obviously, without a lift you're limited to only certain things. One day when I have the means, I would like a garage with a lift so I can hoist the car up and have fun planning mods all day long :P
