I think Toyota has shifted its major focus onto Lexus so that's where the bulk of their efforts and resources are being spent. Lexus has to be something that is 100% their own in order for it to have something to show for historically in the future.
Since the Toyota brand is already well established this frees it up for broad experimentation, including such sports car collaborations.
Sometimes I wonder whether the new Supra would look a little better even with this short wheelbase if they were to move the cockpit back a tad more like the original 2000GT or the first M Coupe (i.e. have the hatch slant all the way to the rear end).
