The only experience I've had with a CVT was on my Polaris Scrambler 500 ATV. I have to say it was a blast to ride. Because of the CVT it had a reverse speed override (from the factory) and would go as fast in reverse as forward. Only time I've driven 40MPH backwards and done effective reverse donuts.
The downside was zero engine braking which would have been very useful in downhill scenarios, but I think car CVTs provide that (although I could be wrong)
