Yep, valve clearance.

Let's see, you have one hand trying to hold the compression gauge in the spark plug hole tight - then with the other hand you are trying to turn over a cold, dry engine.

Now, HOW could you get a false reading?? -

Back in the day, it took me both hands to hold a compression gauge in a spark plug hole (on a 8:1 compression ratio engine) -

(hesh up, @Tcoat , I was NOT a 98 pound weakling - I just weighed 98 pounds)
