BTW, the 86 was supposed to be the design resurrection of the 2000GT. You can clearly see the inspiration if you put them side by side, which Toyota actually did in many of the early marketing photos and exhibits. The "space invaders" shape on the reverse light and embedded in the plastic accents is actually the shape of the 2000GT badge, hidden all around the car as a tribute to the original.
So the 86 is in the way of a line between the 2000GT and the new Supra. The Supra really seems to be something else entirely. Not that it follows from the old Supra, just as the 86 has almost nothing in common with the AE86 it's named after. Both of those names are just marketing stunts to draw in fanboys who will drink any koolaid Toyota offers them.
