This did make me think, how much fuel does a car use at idle. Some interesting information on that
here including this chart.
I did some quick math with this using a car that gets 30MPG and one that gets 15MPG driving 60 miles with and without idling for 30 minutes first, using the numbers in this article (assigning the smallest idle use to the better car)
The car that gets 15MPG has a smaller drop in MPG after idle than does the car that gets better MPG. Anything below 15MPG has increasingly less drop, over about 15MPG (in this comparison) you start seeing the higher MPG car having the lesser drop in overall MPG.
I don't really know what that means other than yes, some cars will show a quicker loss in MPG than others depending on how much fuel they use at idle, and what the use when moving.
