If I let may car sit and idle for half a tank, drove 50 miles and calculated that I got 2 mpg and you drove the exact same car for 50 miles without idling and got 40 mpg does that mean the car's mileage got better?
Agreed, normal idle times will get lost in the wash but that does not mean they don't mean anything. They will impact the gauged reading as part of the average not get totally subtracted out.
