Yep, it always has been. I remember back in the late 50s, when I was painting cars, a gallon of enamel automotive paint costs about $30 (minimum wage was $1.00 per hour).

A gallon of enamel paint would cover a full sized car (one heavy coat).

Back then, if you wanted 20 coats of hand rubbed every other coat of lacquer paint, you best be rich!
