Tcoat says, it depends on where you live. Atlanta metro, for example, is a "commuting" town. Very few people live within "spitting distance" of work. I drive 40 miles each way to work, mostly rural roads. Most everyone one I know drives at least 10 miles, and some up to 60.
In addition, there are no stores within walking distance of my house, basically we drive everywhere. I own 5 cars, 2 of which I am the primary driver. Between the FRS (weekdays and some weekends) and the Suburban (weekends and vacations) I drive about 35,000 miles a year.
I do think I'm higher than most, but I don't really think I'm that out of the ordinary. My boss drives an F250. He lives 5 miles from work, but overall puts 25,000 miles a year on his truck because he uses it just about every weekend to haul his boat to a fishing tournament somewhere.
That's life outside the city limits.
