Personally, I think you may be over thinking the recall/repair thing. Replacing valve springs on a boxer isn't really any different than it would be in a 4 cam Toyota V-6 -- just a few less valves.

The only difference I see, is that the engine has to come out to do the repair whereas a V-6 with lots of room in the engine bay might be doable in-car.


As for the trade in price you mentioned - I think you're pretty close. I would say 8-10K tops. You may come across a deal where they give you more on paper for it, but any difference is being made up for in profit on the new car which you could otherwise negotiate off if you weren't trading in.
