The picture and instructions are a bit misleading, telling us to measure some valves on one bank, then rotating the engine to measure others, but we know from timing instructions that at certain positions, all 8 valves on a certain bank will be free. That may not be the position to accurately measure the lash, but it should suffice to remove components without stress.
