FWIW, I installed the Reference 500 series into my 2016 BRZ, which has an Alpine iLX-107 head unit with wireless CarPlay. OEM audio plus did a great job tuning the system to that head unit for me. MarvinC93 described the 2016 BRZ head unit replacement process pretty well. You can check out my 2016 BRZ head unit install DIY thread for some more info. I ended up installing a newer dash trim because I like the clean black leather / red stitching look and always hated the trapezoid-shaped cutout on the 2016.
