I know from direct observation that it isn't. I tried ethanol free at five different stations around Louisiana. Only one didn't give me crickets, and another was almost as bad as Sam's Club gas.

My experience also directly contradicts the heat myth. I've done most of my driving in Louisiana, Texas and Florida. My crickets are worst when the weather is colder and stops in the summer. I haven't heard a chirp in months.

However, I did track trends with different brands. My car was generally quieter on Chevron. Shell was hit or miss but usually fell on the quieter side. Sunoco was noisy. Sam's Club was ungodly loud. Marathon is weird, in that some stations would result in loud crickets and some would make it ultra quiet.

At 92K miles now, my crickets have all but stopped. I only hear them sporadically in the winter when I get a tank of winter blend gas, like when I drive north out of Florida for the holidays.
