It's been more than a decade since I had to deal with this stuff, but I would have thought 15 month old would still be in infant seat, which must be backward facing. Small child's neck isn't strong enough for the forward thrust in case of accident. And children under 12 should be in the back to avoid exposure to the airbag (see p.67 in the 2013 FR-S manual).

Just wait till the child grows up and realizes there is a front seat release at the back of the passenger seat. Then the wife and the child will be fighting non-stop for how space for the two passenger side seats is split. Then you'll want to add an extra "family" car so you can throw out the whiners and have some quality time in the 86 by yourself
