I was concerned about those issues, but as I mentioned earlier in this thread, I don't have a passenger often, and a passenger with a drink at the same time happens even less frequently. The very minor inconvenience is far outweighed by the much better ergonomics provided by the arm rest (and the ability to keep unsightly charging cables and odds and ends stowed out of sight).
As to the drilling, well yeah - kind of a bummer. I guess you could probably use 3M tape, but Lord willing I'm keeping the car for years and even if I sold it, it's an OEM part so I'd just leave it in anyway.
