Main reason for additional wheels is because mount and balance labor prices have gotten expensive.
It is typical now to pay $25. each wheel for mount and balance these days.
Anybody looking for studded need to check their local laws. Studded tires are prohibited in many areas.

Steel wheels are best and dedicated wheels saves a pile of wear and tear changing tires every year. Even better to go to 16" wheels and keep them narrow. Th deeper sidewalls help a pile in deeper snow.
