I know nothing about how the AT works so excuse my ignorance. I am guessing they use vacuum to shift and can't rely on the vacuum generated by the engine because under load the vacuum is too low to shift which would necessitate a dedicated pump. So are you saying the pump is creating a vacuum on the same system as the rest of the car?
