I believe one of the new features for 2018 was "One Touch Signaling," which I had always assumed just meant their own, OEM version of a basic TapTurn module. However, it sounds like it might have been done at the BCM level, which would be why it suddenly doesn't play well with more advanced flasher relays...
That's my uneducated guess. Everything IS electronic these days, so it does make sense to have the turn signals controlled by the BCM, rather than by a physical relay. That allows them to easily program things like one touch signaling without changing things at the hardware level. I was actually surprised, when I went from my 1998 Outback to my 2015 BRZ, that the turn signals still utilized a mechanical flasher relay. For a car so focused on weight savings, little things like that count!
