Some are in the intake and some are in the exhaust. There is a different name for the exhaust ones but I don't remember what it is and most just call them all "backfires" anyway. Both are just explosions outside of the combustion chamber but the exhaust ones tend to be more spectacular. Sort of like burping versus farting.
